FACTS ABOUT DENTAL INSURANCE:

Dr. Logan and Dr. Fritsch feels their relationship with you, the patient, is the most important thing when it comes to determining what is best for your individual health. For this reason, we have chosen not to have a contract with any insurance company.  As a courtesy to you, we are happy to file and process your insurance claims, receive payment and post the credit from your insurance coverage to your account. What a blessing it is to have some insurance help when it comes to your dental health but please understand our practice is not an insurance driven practice.  All policies have limitations, and do not cover 100% of the fees charged. Ultimately, it is your responsibility for the total cost of treatment regardless what insurance reimburses.

We will gladly assist you in understanding your dental coverage at any time. Our office is committed to helping you maximize your insurance benefits. We can provide you with benefits estimates based on your insurance company’s information. Because insurance policies vary, we can only estimate your coverage in good faith, but cannot guarantee coverage due to the complexities and variety of insurance contracts.

Fact #1 - No Insurance Pays 100% of all Procedures

Dental insurance is meant to be an aid in receiving dental care. Many patients think their insurance pays 90-100% of all dental fees. This is not true! Most plans pay between 50%-80% of the average total fee. Some pay more, some pay less. The percentage is usually determined by how much you or your employer has paid for the coverage, or the type of contract your employer has set up with the insurance company.

Fact #2 - Benefits are Determined by the Insurance Company

You may notice that sometimes dental insurers reimburse you or the dental office at a rate lower than the dentist's actual fee. Frequently, insurance companies state the payment was reduced because your dentist's fee exceeded the usual, customary or reasonable fee ("UCR") used by the company.

A statement such as this gives the impression that any fee greater than the amount paid by the insurance company is well above what dentists in the area charge. This can be very misleading and is not accurate.

Each Insurance company sets their own fee schedules.  These allowable fees may vary widely because each company collects data based on claims they have processed. The data is correlated and the insurance company arbitrarily chooses a level they call the "allowable UCR" fee. Frequently the data can be three to five years old and these "allowable" fees are set so the insurance company can make a 20-30% profit.

Unfortunately, many insurance companies imply your dentist is "overcharging", rather than say they are "underpaying" or that their benefits are low. In general, the less expensive insurance policy will use a lower usual, customary or reasonable (UCR) figure and the reimbursement level varies from company to company.
